1920s Kitchen exhibit at WCMA

1920s Kitchen

The 1920s was a transitional decade between the heavy decorative features of the Victorian home and the functional, ‘scientific’ approach of the modern era. The introduction of electricity and running water to urban and some rural homes revolutionized household management.
The housewife was now the target of a huge consumer industry. New appliances promised to save labour and promote efficiency. The reality of the 1920s kitchen looked like this one: a 1918 wood-burning cookstove and older corner cupboard alongside the new enamelled table, all-purpose cabinet and electric refrigerator.
