If These Walls Could Speak

The House of Industry and Refuge, 1877-1947

After nearly two years of research and planning, a major permanent exhibit examines life in the Wellington County "House of Industry." Originally called the "Poor House," the building is now home to the Wellington County Museum and Archives. The exhibit, featured throughout the Museum, provides glimpses into the lives and activities of the people who lived, worked or visited here.

A superb scale model of the site shows many people and activities on a typical early fall day in 1892. Attitudes towards poverty, charity and a community's social responsibilities are reflected in the many compelling stories and absorbing photos uncovered by research.

This exhibition is a recipient of an Ontario Museum Association Award of Excellence in 2007.
